My Involvement

During my time here at IU Indianapolis, I have been given the chance to go outside of my comfort zone and push myself. This has allowed me to try different things that will help me network as well as gain skills for my future career.

Camp Brosius

Through the Fitness Management and Personal Training major I get the opportunity to go to a leadership camp in Wisconsin. This camp allows for you to meet other people who have similar interest as you. Camp Brosius allows for you to lean about yourself and help you identify what kind of leader you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are when leading people. This camp is physically and mentally demanding challenging you to go through different tasks that require you to think outside of the box but also physically challenge you to get through the obstacle. We even get the opportunity to face our fears and to to a high ropes course that can also be physically demanding. Overall, Camp Brosius is a special experience that I was so thankful to be able to be a part of and it has made me want ot go back and be a councilor to help other people identify what kind of leaders they are.

What I Learned About Myself

During my time at the leader ship camp, Camp Brosius, I got feed back from fellow class mates about what my strengths were as a leader. The 5 main leadership strengths that I learned about myself was that I am empathetic, a good problem solver, I am good with teamwork, I am an active listener, I have ethics, and I am innovative.

Some common feedback that I kept getting from people is that I needed to be more confident with myself. I can understand why they would say this bacause I always want to make sure everyone feel heard and is happy with our plan and sometimes I do not jsut go with what I think which can make me seem less confident. This is something that I am working on and I feel that overtime with having other opportunites to lead people I will gain more confidence in muself as a leader.

MOCO

The Moving Dance Company (MOCO) is a dance company at IU Indianapolis. I joined this club as an outlet for me to continue to be active and dance with other girls who also have a passion for dance. Through MOCO I have been able to network and meet other sorority girls from different sororities on campus.

Alpha Chi Omega

Leadership Positions

As I have had time being in a sorotiy I have started to understand how things work and I wanted to start getting involved in some leadership posiitons in Alpha Chi Omega.

Mystagogue

I was elected for a semester to be Alpha Chi's Mystagogue. In this position you are in charge of the big little process and helping the bigs and littles get paired up so they can find their forever bigs or littles. While I was in this position I had to go to their weekly new member ed classes. I also was required to make many google forms so I can get feeback on who the bigs and little want to go on sis dates with. At the end of each week I had to pair the bigs and little the best I could based off of who they wanted to go on a sis date with next for the following week. While I was in this position I learned how to manage my time, help answer the new members questions, be there as a support to the new girls of axo, and learn how to have difficult conversations with girls when there is conflict. These are skills that will be beneficial for me one day in my future career.

VP Membership Programming

After getting to be Mystagogue for a semester I new I wanted to have a bigger role in Alpha Chi Omega and help our chapter. I decided to run for exec to be Alpha Chi'e VP Membership Programming. I got it after giving the girls a speech as to why i should be elected. In this leadership position, I am in charge of planning different kinds of sisterhood events throughout the semester as well as plan the big Sisterhood Retreat for each semester. In this role I have to do weekly meetings with exec and the chapter. I am plan different events with other VP members. I reach out to different places about for the sisterhood retreat and compare prices. I encourage girls to be involved and show up to sisterhood events. This positions has given be the skills to properly budget, communicate with girls to keep them updated on future events, have hard conversations with members, and also learn how to work as a team with other exec members to help run Alpha Chi Omega.

Service opportunity

The Coburn Place

Alpha Chi Omega's philanthropy is raising awareness for domestic violence. The money that we raise goes towards, The Coburn Place, a shelter for domestic violence survivors to stay at until they can survive once again without the support of the shelter. At this shelter many families live their because their situation from domestic violence caused for them to become homeless. Alpha Chi will go to this shelter a couple times a semester to help out in any way we can. We have helped move furniture around to make a new living space for a family. We have also helped build different kinds of furniture to put into the apartments. This has been a very neat experience to be able to work together for a cause that can significantly help improve a family's living situation.

KINE-P246

Resistance Exercise/ Sports Conditioning

Summary Of Experience in Class

In the class KINE-P246 we were taught how to lead a fitness class. We had two different types of classes we had to teach during the semester. One was a conditioning class and then the other was a resistance training class. We had to lead a workout for both types of training. During these presentations we guided our class through a warm up, the main activity for the exercise, and a cool down. We were instructed to have modification for each exercises to accomodate those who may have an injury. In the class we also learned how to talk through the workout with clients and explain why we are doing a specific movement and what is it working. We also learned what a proper warm up and cool down looked like.  Throughout this class we learned how to set up programs for clients based on the client's personal goals and needs. This is great practice for when we are working with future clients who may enjoy doing specific activities but want to incorporate more resistance training into their workouts. Overall, this class was a great way to get experience for teaching a fitness class.

Personal Growth Form Semester

After this semester I feel that my leadership abilities have grown so much. I feel more confident when having to communicate with people and instruct them on how to do things. I feel more comfortable leading a group fitness class after having practice and understanding key elements to make the class a success. I now know how to be mindful of time, have proper communication about the workout, keep clients engaged during the workouts, and find new and interesting ways to get a workout in. I have been told that I need to improve my confidence as a leader and I feel that this class has emencely helped me to improve my confidence not only for a fitness class but for any other future leadership role I could possibly take.
